Questions we get asked
Which Macs does it run on?
Macs with Apple silicon — the M-series chips. The transcription and the handwriting reading both lean on hardware that Intel Macs do not have.
Does it work on Windows or Linux?
Not today. Several of the pieces it depends on — the handwriting recognition, the on-device answering model — are parts of macOS itself. A version for other platforms would be a different app rather than a port, so it is honest to say no rather than soon.
Do I need a subscription?
No. SageArchive is $49, once. There is no server to run on your behalf, so there is nothing to charge you monthly for, and charging you monthly to escape two monthly charges would be a strange way to make the argument.
Do I still need my device's own subscription?
That depends on the device and on what you use it for. SageArchive reads your notes out of the account you already have; if the device's own paid tier is only buying you transcription minutes or handwriting search, those are the two things SageArchive does on your own machine for nothing. Check what else your plan covers before cancelling anything — we would rather you kept a subscription you needed than lost something you use.
My device is not on the list. Will you add it?
Possibly, and it helps enormously to hear which one. The app was built so that teaching it a new recorder or tablet is a contained piece of work rather than a rewrite. Tell us the device and how you get notes off it today.
What happens to my notes if you disappear?
Nothing. They are files on your Mac, in a plain, documented database, and the app can export everything to Markdown, plain text or JSON at any time — one note or the whole archive. There is no lock-in to be trapped by because there is no service to be shut off.
Can it tell who said what?
Not when transcribing on your Mac — no speech model that runs locally can do that today, at any price. For a meeting where it really matters, you can send that one recording to a cloud service that does speaker labels. That is off by default and the app asks first.
Is my data used to train anything?
No. We never receive it, so there is nothing for us to train on. If you choose to switch on a cloud provider for transcription or answering, what that provider does is governed by the account and terms you have with them — worth reading, and worth choosing a provider whose terms you like.
How big is the app?
About 31 MB to download. The speech model is fetched separately the first time you transcribe something and is a few gigabytes, because it is the full-quality one rather than a cut-down version.
